its wild that in 2024 there are still people using the term mary sue but its really wild to use that term to describe characters from medieval literature. “beowulf was such a mary sue in beowulf (between 975 and 1025 CE)” you sound insane. also sorry if you dont get galahad and cant see the tremendous pathos of an extremely young man chosen to die who is punished by the narrative for seeking human connection and who is good but also strange and abrasive and isolated… but no yeah the bodhisattva guanyin was such a mary sue in journey to the west (1592) and her abilities definitely did not have religious meaning and were not a literary choice which served to further the themes and ideas of the literary work… get real

Veilguard has made me so angry it has pretty much retroactively ruined the rest of the series for me and made me look back on them with bitterness. Honestly the only thing managing to keep me from writing them off completely and never looking back is mainly Varric and Alistair to a smaller degree. But mostly Varric.

Which just adds to the bitterness because of how Veilguard treated him. And how Bioware treated his lead writer.

I don't think I've ever been angrier or felt more betrayed by any franchise before. Mainly because with other franchises, the thing I was a fan of is strong enough to preserve my love for it through any shitty newer additions. But Dragon Age has always been extremely flawed to me in many ways. It's just the good parts were enough to keep me attached to it.

So to see that THIS is the direction it all lead. That THIS was the reward for over a decade of loyalty despite the glaring problems and annoyances with the series.

It's really retroactively soured my opinion of the previous games as well and amplified the things I disliked about them in my mind.

okay so i wasn't going to post this line bc it is like the fundamental core of the fic in question and then infinity chat started talking about shoka again so you get it. from the ~10k of post-canon "shoka and al meet again on the train" fic i've been mindlessly writing for a week:

i've seen some people complaining about how "you let people think those things about nicky because the truth is too terrible" being stupid and not making sense because there's not a "horrible truth". but the horrible truth is that no matter how hard agatha tried she couldn't save her own son. the truth was that she couldn't control that and it made her feel weak and scared! and it broke her heart!

the truth is the terror of vulnerability and a lack of control. of course agatha "i inspired the wicked witch" harkness would rather the world think she traded her son for power. then it bolsters her reputation and makes her feel like her loss meant something

i suppose it's an unpopular opinion but, man, the Percy Jackson series

was so so terrible. The pacing was weirdly slow, the line delivery awkward, the acting stiff, the dialogue made me roll my eyes. It's taken me about 4.5 hours to watch the last episode bc I keep pausing to do something else (still haven't finished it. I paused to write this). It also occurred to me while watching that this is just a USian story, featuring USian themes and ideals and a decidedly USian way of seeing the world. My culture is only used as window dressing. This series has nothing to say about greek mythology.
